Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 30, 2026biteful ("we", "us", "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
What we collect
Photos you scan. When you scan a food, label, or menu, the photo is sent to our AI provider (xAI) for analysis. The photo is processed in real time and is not stored on our servers. xAI's data retention policies apply during processing.
Voice input. If you use the voice feature during onboarding, audio is transcribed using ElevenLabs and immediately discarded. We do not store audio recordings.
Scan history. Your scan results (text, verdicts, citations) are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. This data never leaves your device unless you choose to share a result card.
Health data. If you connect Apple Health, we read heart rate, HRV, and sleep data to show post-meal insights. This data is read on-device and is never transmitted to any server. We do not write to Apple Health.
Subscription status. Managed entirely by Apple's StoreKit. We do not process or store payment information.
What we don't collect
- No account or login required
- No email address collected
- No location data
- No advertising identifiers or tracking
- No analytics SDK in v1 (we may add privacy-friendly analytics like TelemetryDeck in the future, and will update this policy accordingly)
Third-party services
- xAI (Grok) — processes your food photos for AI analysis. xAI Privacy Policy
- Google Gemini — fallback AI provider, used only when xAI is unavailable. Gemini API Terms
- PubMed / NCBI — citation lookup (public government API, no user data sent)

Data retention
